With safe infrastructure and equitable programming that supports people of all ages and abilities to bike around town for their everyday trips.

about the project

Bicycling for Everyone is an action plan developed by Bike Walk Tompkins to empower more people in and around Ithaca to start bicycling and bike more often, especially for their everyday trips. Based on years of research, community input, and pilot tests, the key actions recommended in this plan will remove barriers to bicycling and make it easier, safer, and more enjoyable for everyone, regardless of age or experience, to travel around Ithaca by bike.

Bicycling for Everyone is a project supported by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and the New York State Department of Transportation.

the 5 E’s framework

We adapted the "five E’s” framework created by the League of American Bicyclists that is used to rank cities by their bicycle-friendliness to craft the Bicycling for Everyone Action Plan. This framework has also been used in comprehensive bike plans and blueprints in other cities large and small.

The Bicycling for Everyone Action Plan is divided into these 5 E’s, and within them you can find the vision, goals, and key actions of the plan. Progress in all five of these areas means that our community is well on its way to being more bicycle-friendly for everyone.

Better Bike Network

Let’s build six Better Bike Network (BBN) routes on Ithaca’s flats that feel as safe and comfortable as the Waterfront Trail but bring you to work, school, grocery stores, and more. Together, these routes will stitch Ithaca’s neighborhoods closer together and better support people who are currently bicycling and those who want to get started for their everyday trips around town.
